Ali has been performing professionally since 1991 and her versatility and ability has seen her in great demand as an artist, appearing around New Zealand in theatre, cabaret and television.
Since graduating from Toi Whakaari - The NZ Drama School, Ali has worked at many of New Zealand’s professional theatre companies and performed in a number of the great musicals. Her leading lady performances include; My Fair Lady; The Sound of Music; South Pacific; Guys and Dolls; Sweeney Todd; Tell Me On a Sunday and more recently Mamma Mia and Blood Brothers.
Other career highlights include; I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; Jerry’s Girls; On the Rocks; The Rocky Horror Picture Show; The Country Wife; The Jungle Book; Dirty Weekends and Eros as well as the at the new Court Theatre productions; A Shortcut to Happiness; Side by Side by Sondheim, Calendar Girls and Grease. New Zealand National Tours include Chess and playing the alternate Eva Peron in Evita, Pirates of Penzance and the recent production of Oklahoma as Ado Annie.
Last year Ali toured New Zealand in Joanna Murray Smith’s one woman play Bombshells which she also toured in 2007 with The Court Theatre and in 2008 and was awarded Actress of the Year at The Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards. This year she is performing Bombshells at New York’s Theatre Row in the United Solo Festival.
Ali has appeared in Christmas in the Park, and with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in Broadway Babes, A Rodgers and Hammerstein Tribute, From Bernstein to Sondheim, The Music is Bond and The Golden Age of Hollywood.
In 2005 Ali travelled to New York to perform at The Yale Cabaret Conference and last year performed her cabaret show Ali Harper; Naughty and Nice – A Down Under Diva! at The Metropolitan Room in New York.
Ali’s television credits include Hope and Wire, Paradise, The Strip and Market Forces. She has recorded numerous commercials for T.V and Radio, has appeared on Good Morning as a guest entertainer and panelist, and co-hosted Wellington’s Classic Hits Breakfast Show in 2006.
Ali was the resident singer with the Carl Doy Band on TV One’s Dancing with the Stars for four seasons.
Ali’s production company, Ali-Cat Productions produces many of her one woman shows around New Zealand.
Her debut album ‘Something so Right’ is a celebration of songs of the 1970s and more recently Ali released her double album ‘Naughty and Nice.’
